Nebraska Rebuilt Title

Does a Rebuilt Title in Nebraska differ from Similar titles in Other States?

Although on the general scale, the procedures, reuirements and consequences of obtaining a rebuilt title for a vehicle are more or less similar in diffetent states, Nebraska has a few peculiarities to point out.

First, a rebuilt salvage vehicle in Nebraska gets a “Previously Salvaged” title, while the most common title name used in other states is Rebuilt Title.

Secondly, Nebraska has a specific threshold for damage, which is 75% of the actual cash value for late-model vehicles. Please note the term late-model applies to vehciels 7 model years or fewer or those with a retail value over $12,000. If a car's damage exceeds this amount, it is deemed a total loss and eligible for a salvage title. This is higher than in many other states, allowing more cars to avoid the salvage title on the one hand, an esmitate how bad the damage in a repaired reuilt vehicles has been, on the other hand. Although, there are states where the damage threshold is 80%, like Florida , Iowa, and Missouri.

Please note that the threshhold of 75% does not apply to flood damaged vehicles if water entered the passenger compartment or it was submerged in water over the floorboard causing damage to mechanical, electrical or computerized systems. In this case the vehicle automatically gets a salvage status.

Then, Nebraska has stringent requirements for obtaining a rebuilt title. The vehicle owner must provide comprehensive documentation, including bills of sale for all major component parts replaced, photographs of the damaged vehicle before and after repairs, and a state patrol inspection. This rigorous process ensures that all rebuilt vehicles meet safety standards.

If the vehicle is repaired to roadworthy condition, it can be issued a rebuilt title, but the history of damage is permanently recorded. This differs from a few states where a vehicle can revert to a clean title after sufficient repairs.

Nebraska also requires a specific disclosure of the salvage history in any sale of a vehicle with a salvage or rebuilt title. This requirement protects future buyers by ensuring they are fully aware of the vehicle's history. However, nowadays this requirement is not unique to Nebraska but is a federal requirement.

Finally, it's important to note that obtaining insurance for a vehicle with a rebuilt title can be more challenging in Nebraska. Some insurance companies may refuse to offer comprehensive or collision coverage for these vehicles due to their history of significant damage. It is necessary to have a liability coverage if you want to drive a rebuilt vehicle in Nebraska legally. Be ready to face higher rates than for vehicles without a salvage history (regardless of the damage type) and to a smaller list of insureres ready to cover a rebuilt vehicle.
